Holderman promote

President James Holderman is strongly
positive about ubu ana boutn Carolina ana
has urged faculty members to adopt a
similar attitude to help face ecomomic
problems this year.
"All of us at Carolina know the dilemmas
of the moment," Holderman told the faculty
during a general meeting earlier this
month. "But I believe the university's and
South Carolina's time has come again.
"The doomsayers need to take stock of the
promise of the citizens of South Carolina, of
their persistence, before they lament that
the state and this university are in mortal
trouble," he said.
Holderman cited several areas in which
USC has made major progress in the past
few years, including the unification of the
nine-campus system, the Alumni
Association and its scholarship program,
and grants from private sources.

now enough university graduates to ensure
South Carolina's prosperity."
The university must take a strong
leadership role to provide the graduates
needed to attract prosperous, high
technology industry to the state, he said.

THE LEGISLATIVE Intern Program is
taking applications for the spring 1983
semester.
Legislative interns, who typically work

the S.C. Senate and House of Representatives,
function as research assistants to
the professional staff of the General
Assembly.
The program, begun in 1978 by President
James Holderman, is open to USC seniors
with at least a 3.0 grade point ratio and
graduate students admitted to a formal
program as degree candidates in good
standing.
Full-time interns earn $500 a month and
must enroll in a puDiic attairs mternsnip
course, which carries three hours credit.
Applications, which must be returned by
Nov. 1, are available from the Bureau of

Participants will debate whether the

for speeches from the audience.

Athletic Department, the contest is open to
any campus organization. The first place

Banners are evaluated by judges chosen

during half time.
Applications can be picked up from the
Alumni House at College and Barnwell
streets. They must be returned to the
Alumni House by noon Friday before the
game.
Banners should be hung on the concrete
walled area inside the stadium and must be
secured from below. Banners must be
posted by 10 a.m. before night games and by
9 a.m. before day games.
