USC is one of a small number of universities across the
nation that has led the way by requiring its own English
placement test, A1 Carr, USC testing coordinator, said
Tuesday.
Freshman English coordinator Tom Waldrep said the
Writing Proficiency Test,implemented in 1975, consists of a
45-minute essay in which students are required to take a
stand on a particular issue and defend it in a logical manner.
The test is then graded holistically by a panel of two
English department members. If their opinions on the score
of the exam differ, a third reader is called in to break the tie.
However, Waldrep points out that 90 percent of the time the
readers agree on the same score for the paper.
Students who score a 1 on the test are placed in English 100,
while students who get a 2 are placed in English 101. Students
who receive a 3 get 3 hours credit for English 101 and must
take English 102, Waldrep said.
If a student gets a 4, he is exempted from freshman English
entirely. "You must remember," Waldrep said, "that a 4 is a
very hard score to achieve. Only 12-13 students have scored a
