Connors mellows
(AP) Jimmy Conners, tennis' reformed firebrand, has
three sports heroes-Pete Rose, Sugar Ray Leonard and
Muhammad Ali-but if you want to make him beam tell him he
reminds you of Ali.
*'1 don't read everything they write about me but I know
some people have compared me to Pete Rose," says the 29
i j year old Wimbledon titlehoiaer, probable co-favorite in the
' coming U.S. Open Championships.
"I am flattered by that, naturally. Some of it may be our
hair style (Prince Valiant) but mainly I think it's the way we
play. I admire anybody who goes out and gives it all he's got.
"But you find the same thing with Sugar Ray Leonard and
Ali. What I liked about Ali was that he did a a lot of talking
but also backed up what he said. You can get by with
anything as long as you back it up. He ranted and raved. He

fluence in age, marriage and fatherhood but admits that a
fierce fire still burns in his chest although he now fights to
keep the flames confined.
"I think I've had it all my life," he said after arriving in
New York Wednesday to prepare for the U.S. Open Championships,
starting next week at Flushing Meadow. "I just
control myself better now.
"Ten years ago I was so young I didn't think about the
consequences. I put my head down and went straight at it,
knocking over anything that got in my way.

r the nasty villain
have to remember in those early days it was also a gimmick
show business. It was (promoter and manager) Bill Riordan's
idea to make me a nasty villain. It worked."
Connors said he still plays every point as if it is the last
tennis ball he will ever hit. He still gets mad and occasionally
blows a gasket.
"Sometimes I need a release," he said. "But when I have
an explosion, it's over quickly. I settle down and forget. I'm
not like John McEnroe and Ilie Natase. They seem to brood
over it, especially Ilie. Ilie can get mad on the first point and
still be thiking about it on the last point.
"McEnroe has a quick fuse. Sometimes I think John has
too much talent for his own good, like Ilie. John is such a
perfectonist he doesn't think he should ever make an error.
Nastase was different. He just forgot to work on his game."
