Bookstore fights
By Don Weatherbee
Remodeling of University Bookstore's
softwares section is under way to eliminate
termite infestation and to repair termite
damage in that area of the store, according
to USC maintenance and bookstore
spokesmen.
USC Physical Plant Services began at the
end of June to tear down the raised portion
of the books tore, which carried T-shirts and
other software items, to expose the termite
colony that had damaged wooden supports
and hardwood floor beneath the section.
Work should be finished by the end of
summer .school. When completely
remodeled, the new softwares section will
be flat instead of raised, Don Miles, director
of University Bookstore, said.
Although termite infestation has been a
recurring problem in the bookstore "for
several years," according to Administrative
Services Manager Gerald
Goings, treatment was always Dut off

termite problem
because exterminators could not reach the
insects to kill them.
Because of the store's construction?it

would have to be attempted from above.
According to a letter Going's office
received from the Modern Exterminating
Co. Inc., which until May held a contract

treated unless the softwares section and the
hardwood floors underneath were
dismantled.
Until this summer, there never was an
"appropriate" time to tear down the softwares
section to treat the termites that were
eating away the wood below, Miles said.
Since work began, the elevated section
has been dismantled and the floor removed.
Holes will soon be bored into the exposed
concrete and insecticide pumped in to kill
the termite colony.
