students and parents for a day of
freshman orientation.
Already questions start and smiling
people in navy blue "ASK ME" shirts
answer easily. Chosen from about 150
applicants, the 11 "ASK ME" people
are orientation assistants; they guide
students and parents through the
schedule and basically run orientation
all aay.
The freshmen and parents finish
their registration business and head
to Russell House Theater to be
properly greeted and introduced to
the orientation assistants and some
USC officials before splitting into
groups.
Parents leave for a student
development session where they
discuss problems, fears and expectations
of their son's or daughter's
first year in college. Freshmen split
into small groups, each group headed
by an orientation assistant, to talk
about themselves, their interests and
expectations of college for about 90
minutes.

IN THE freshman group session,
the orientation assistant introduces
himself again and sets an easy,
relaxed atmosphere. Each freshman
gets to know another bv meeting the
person next to him, and then introducing
their new friends to the
group.
They fill out and exchange index
cards that answer some break-theice-type
questions: Who would they
have lunch with if they could dine with
anyone? What kind of car would they
drive if they could have any kind?
What animal would they be if they
could be any animal? Where would
they go if they could visit anywhere in
the world?
Freshmen discuss their fears and
excitement about coming to USC. The
excitement concentrates on meeting
people, freedom away from parents
and, of course, parties. Dominating
the fear category are terrors of
getting lost on campus, making and
keeping good grades and getting
along with roommates.
Next, a more immediate fear
overwhelms the freshmen; it is time
to take the English Proficiency Test.^
requiring them to write an essay on
one of two given topics. Later these
essays will determine their placement
in frochmnn TT.ntflich
Meanwhile, parents head to a
session with academic deans where
they meet the department dean of
their offspring's major.

USC, hospital officials
reach new agreement
By Susan Muir
A new five-year affiliation agreement between the USC
School of Medicine and Richland Memorial Hospital will
become effective January 1,1983.
The agreement replaces a 1974 pact and is designed to be
more responsive to the present and long-range needs of the
two institutions.
An eight-member USC committee and Richland Memorial
officials negotiated nearly a year to draw up the new
agreement. After the hospital's board of trustees unanimously
approved the agreement, it was then sent to USC's board of
trustees for approval.
"The document that was put together was a sound
document," said USC Provost Frank Borkowski.
According to the agreement, education for undergraduate
medical students is the university's responsibility, while the
hospital will educate graduate medical residents.
The agreement says USC must pay for any space, personnel,
supplies and sevices required by the medical school
in addition to those needed for Richland Memorial's
patient-care functions. Also, the university's medical
educational activities or research requirements of the
nospitai must not raise nospitai services' cost.
In addition, USC must pay for hospital costs when a patient
admitted by USC faculty members does not meet the
financial requirements.
USC trustee Michael J. Mungo questioned the financial
reimbursement policy of the agreement, saying such a policy
could lead to "an incredible amount of money."
But according to Borkowski, the university has control
over how many beds are reserved for the medical school,
preventing USC from footing exorbitant medical bills.
The document also states that all USC faculty members
who want to teach or conduct research at Richland Memorial
must obtain permission from hospital and USC governing
bodies.
No more than 80 undergraduate students from the USC
School of Medicine or the Medical University of S C. in
Charleston will be located at Richland Memorial's present
site. The hospital may limit the number of medical school
teaching beds after seeking USC approval.
The agreement further states the hospital reserves the
authority to establish priorities for bed usage and regulate
the number, size and referral procedures for outpatient
clinics and emergency medical services.
Margaret Wickenburg, chairman of the hospital board,
said* Richland Memorial "is pleased to continue
working with the USC medical school" and that "the
agreement provides for a mutually productive and mutually
beneficial working relationship between the university and
the hospital."
