determining these rules, but they can sit in on committees
and discuss their views on the rules or policies with
professors. Student Government President Ashley Abel
expressed his concern that students have not direct consent
in the adopted policies for the University.
Unfortunately, students had not even an indirect influence
on the attendance policy because of a communications
problem. Professor Howard-Hill said students have the
opportunity to go to faculty meetings, but he had not seen a
student representative this year which is "absolutely
deplorable."
Student Government members only learned of the policy's
development at their weekly meeting this past week. Matt
Ward, Senate Academic Chairman, said he an other senators
are uncertain of who held the responsibility to communicate
with the Faculty Senate; it is possible that no one was ever
appointed to attend the faculty neetings.
Ward said he hopes to obtain permission from Robert
B. Patterson, Chairman of Faculty Senate, to speak at
tomorrow's general faculty meeting to represent students'
concern over the ten percent policy. He said he admits that
Student Government is at fault for not providing student
representation at previous faculty meetings, but he hopes he
can prompt the faculty to consider making provisions for
excused absences. If the faculty does not make a motion to
reconsider the attendance policy tomorrow, the policy will go
into effect for the fall semester.
Ward said the communications slip-up on Student
Government's part will be investigated next fall. He said he
hopes students won't blame the present administration for
the incompetence.
Presently the Faculty Manual states no attendance
requirements for professors; it only states that all staff
members are expected to meet classes regularly and at
scheduled times. In case of illnesses or emergencies,
