The USC 1982 Writers' Series ended the way it began? with
a Nobel Prize winner. Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz opened the
series Feb. 2 and Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer closed
the series to a capacity crowd April 28.
In between, the series hosted poet Donald Hall, short story
writer and novelist Doris Betts and John Irving, author of
The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire.
"I think the series went well. I think we have done as well
as anybody in the country," commented Dr. George Geckle,
chair man of the English Department and coordinator of the

But Geckle said there is a lack of student interest in the
series. "I think my major disappointment is the lack of
student participation. They come out to hear a John Irving or
a Tom Wolfe who arp both Plllt ficnirf?c hilt Hrt nr?* fnm ruit

for writers they haven't heard of, such as George Garret,
Donald Hall and Doris Betts.
"She (Betts) is a neglected writer ,r>t of ways but I
thought she was one of the best people w ' Geckle said.
Geckle said he did not think students turned out in numbers
for any cultural event and that ''the vast majority of students
are far more interested in sports. This is not an atypical
school in that respect. Like (Kurt) Von ",ut says, 'So it
goes.'
Putting his complaint against student participation aside,

Geckle said this year's series had a few problems even
though late funding prevented him from completing the
schedule until late February.
"For the most part, we have not had many problems. Very
rarely will a writer create a problem and refuse to do
things." he exnlained.
Geckle said his biggest fear with the Writers' Series is a
writer refusing to read: "That would be the all-time bummer.
I don't think anyone wants to hear me read."
The Department of English and the College of Humanities
and Social Sciences sponsored the Writers' Series. Quality
writers do not come cheap, according to Geckle. "I have paid
between $750 plus expenses all the way up to $2500 of the $4000
for Singer," he recalled. The South Carolina Committee for
the Humanities paid the rest.
