Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it has been proven that the
British Expeditionary Force finally made it to the South
Atlantic. The British handily defeated the Argentinian
marines stationed on South Georgia, and once again claimed
mai niue specK 01 son lor Her Majesty, the Queen.
In response the British victors entertained the Argentinian
commanders for dinner, Argentinian citizens ripped apart a
poster of Margaret Thatcher in downtown Buenos Aires, and
a spokesman for the Organization of American States said
that Great Britain should remove all forces from the South
Atlantic.
Denis Healey, a member of the British Parliament, states
that a diplomatic solution is possible, but if no diplomatic
solution is founl then Great Britain will act under the United
Nations charter in self defense.
U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig has been urged b\
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to continue h:
quest for a diplomatic solution, and in the event the solution
is not forthcoming she urged Haig to pledge the U.S.'s sup
port for Great Britain.

Unless I missed somethingcruciall could have sworn that
Argentina, a South American nation known for its gauchos,
pampas, beef cattle, and the fact that it changes governments
almost as often as most folks change underwear, invaded
a few islands with inhabitants of British descent that
lad been undei the British thumb for 149 years.
The Falkland Islands have been under Spanish rule, under
British rule, and under no particular rule because no one
really wanted them. But the only relation they have ever had
to Argentina is the fact that they are located off its coast, way
off its coast, as a matter of fact. Up until a few days ago the
Falklanders concerned themselves only with performing
meir jods, tending their sheep, and doing the usual things
Falklanders do. Then one day they woke up and these guys
from Argentina were wandering the streets of Port Stanley
proclaiming everything to be under the rule of the junta.
Now, if it's OK for Argentina to invade the Falklands just
becaue they're close by, regardless of official reasons, does
this mean that it's OK for the U.S. to invade Nova Scotia? It is
close by, and the fishing is supposed to be really good this
time of year.
I must admit the British completely surprised me when
they took South Georgia back from the Argentinians. For the
past three weeks I had been thinking that the supposed
retaliatory action in the South Atlantic was merely fodder
fortheBBC and something to keep the British citizens' minds
off their economic troubles at home.
But no, the British obviously mean business. They swept
right through the South Georgia occupation force. Then they
had the graciousness to entertain the commanding officers
for dinner. A touch of class reminiscent of past eras, you
don't find a great deal of civilized behavior running rampant
among warring nations.
I just hope they enjoyed their dinner.

It's that time of the semester. Students are ready for
summer, and are not ready to study for exams. The result
is . . .
I m not sure yet what the result will be. I won't find out
until I get my grades sometime this summer. But it is apparent
that I and most of the other students just don't care
about anything to do with school anymore. I can't answer for
the other students, but as for me, I just feel like summer has
already started, and I don't study in the summer! I would
rather lay out in the sun every day, sipping daquiris, and then
go out and enjoy myself all night (topping off the evening
with Dunkin Donuts), sleep late in the mornings, and in
general, just relax and enjoy myself before I have to go home
and work this summer. Did I mention classes in there
anywhere?
In two weeks we leave Carolina, and with it, our friends for
three months. Some friends will be graduating, and it will be
even longer before we see them again. Who wants to waste
time studying? non-seniors can do that next year (seniors
are too tired of it by not).
Why do they have classes this time of year anyway? No one
goes to class now? it's even easy to get a place on the
Humanities elevator. By 12:00, the campus looks deserted
around the class buildings. Many teachers have even cancelled
classes for the rest of the semester. I don't blame
them? I wouldn't (don't) go either.
I have a class in 30 minutes. Guess I'll go get my
strawberry aquiri and go out in the sun.
I'll study next year.
