Lab Assistant Enjoys

"I sift soil samples where bodies have decayed," Dan
Owens said when he rode a bus to take a look at sand layers
near Columbia Mall. "It's a living."
Owens is a lab assistant at the Institute of Archeology and
Anthropology where he works from eight to ten hours a week.
"We force water through a machine and find pieces of
material. I've found seeds which were inside the stomach of a
body when a person died," he said.
The American Indians buried their dead in mounds made
of layers of sand. Owens has found pieces of jawbone and
teeth through the sifting process. The particles are so small
^^^nanone^iaTOo^een sifted they probably would not have
been found.
"You picture weird guys with glasses and frizzy hair down
there, but they're really quite normal," he said.

Sifting Soil Samples
"Down there" is the institute beneath Maxcy dormitory. It
is musty and usually hot there, Owens said. There are boxes
of artifacts stacked on shelves along the walls. There are
pieces of Indian pottery and baskets sitting on top of filing

vauiucia. nere are aiso a sinK, a coffee maker, long tables
covered with broken bits of pottery, a glass case containing
arrowheads, and a few workers like Owens who sit and dust
fragments, painting white dots on each and numbering them.
4'We have a pretty good working relationship," he said.
"Everyone gets to do the same thing at one time or another."
"They provide everything for you to work with, but it can
still get tedious. You're down in a basement with no windows
and you hum or whistle while you work."
His fraternity brothers and his dorm friends often ask him
about his work. "I tell them I washed a whole bunch of rocks
today." But they are interested that I get to work with old
things
"Yesterday I found tips of fingers and some little teeth."
