Soccer Team Places Thii
Carolina's soccer team and Head Coach Mark Berson
came home pleased with their performance that merited a
third place finish in the Eastman-Clemson Invitational
Soccer Tournament last weekend.
Clemson edged past Duke 1-0 in the finals to successfully
aeiena lis line in me tournament. USU beat Wake Forest 1-0
in the consolation match to capture third place in the tourney.
4 'The tournament was an excellent opportunity to evaluate
our talent under a game situation," Coach Berson said.
"We've changed a lot of things around this spring. We've
moved a lot of people around; we've changed from playing
just man-to-man to switching between zone and man-to-man;
we are also using substitutions more because of the depth we
have."
USC began tournament action Friday afternoon by beating
the University of North Carolina 2-1. Midfielder David Burr
blasted a direct kick over a wall of North Carolina defenders
and into the net for the Gamecocks' first score. Forward
Chris Heidelberger put USC ahead on an assist from Tom
IVCIHJ' .
In Saturday's action,Duke edged past Carolina 2-1. Mike
Devine, who moved to midfield from the fullback position,
netted what Berson called the prettiest goal of the tournament.
Devine stole the ball and "placed a perfect shot into
the opposite corner of the net," Berson said.
Devine and Eric Hawkes have been named co-captains for
the 1982 season. "Devine was a real bright spot in the tournament.
Moving from defender to midfielder is a difficult
adjustment to make," Berson commented.
"Eric (Hawkes) is a good stabilizing factor in the backfield,"
Berson continued. "Hawkes will once again be a
dominating force on defense."
