I would just like to say a
word about what Mr. Rapoport
had to say about the
Middle East in the Feb.18
Gamecock. Usually when

Arab-Israeli conflicts, the
writer keeps reminding us
about how the Jews
suffered in the past. By this
he tries to make the reader
feel sorry for the Jews and
then conclude that they had
to be free and have their own
state. Nobody is against the
Jews being free. But he
keeps forgetting that these
same people are doing the
same things to Palestinians.
He keeps forgetting how
these lands were taken away
from their owners and how

I am writing in response to
a letter which appeared in
the Feb. 17 issue of the
Gamecock concerning the
Greek system. The person
who wrote this letter obviously
had no idea what he
was talking about.
First of all, pledges are not
members and they are not
afforded the privileges of
membership until they are
initiated when they become
full-fledged members.
Likewise, members are not
pledges and cannot be

Some Christians and Jews

his letter, that this land s<

gives the pledge time to

These include grades,

There's been quite a change in the WEATHER. We find
ourselves basking in the sun one day and protecting ourselves
against snow the next. But USC was really able to
adapt. Except for a vild-eyed southerners who contemplated
leaving cam^. . get home early before they got
snowed in, most people were able to survive. One thing
struck me as funny: people carrying around umbrellas to
protect themselves from the snow. Snow flurries have never

response to my recent claim .that WNOK-FM shouldn't have
the audacity to call itseit tne "numoer one ruuis. &UI11UII 111
America." William L. McElveen, vice president of Audubon
Broadcasting Company, which controls WNOK-FM, wrote:
"I was humored by Mark Platte's stream-of-consciousness
column in the Monday, February 22 Gamecock, in which he
questioned WNOK-FM's claim to be the "number one rock
station in America. Actually, rather than being self-imposed,
the 'claim' was conferred upon us by Arbitron, the universally
acknowledged authority on radio research. Mr. Platte's
suggestion that the only relief from the 'dull' radio stations in
Columbia is WUSC-FM is about as enlightening as the
suggestion that the only relief from The New York Times is
i the Gamecock." Well, Mr. McElveen, if we were to equate
WUSC-FM with the Gamecock, two student mediums, then
could we, in the same breath, compare WNOK-FM with The
i New York Times, both mediums in the "real world"? I mm*
not. I would also like to know exactly when the survey was
f done by Arbitron. Was it done when all other radio stations in
i major cities, good radio stations, were off the air? I still do
? not think you can support your claim to be the "number one
; rock station in America" in the midst of university students
i who come from parts of the country where th2 radio,
programming is slick and varied. I also never knew that the
"number one rock station in America" played beach music
and Barry Manifow. Those are good examples of rock music.
I Finally, Mr. McElveen, I am glad to know you read the
r Gamecock more than I listen to your stauon
