USC's soccer team christened the bubble last weekend in
the Carolina Invitational Indoor Soccer Tournament.
The dirt field was not the most ideal playing condition but
served its purpose in keeping the players dry during the
inclimate weather Friday and Saturday. The tournamenl
proved that the bubble has the potential to become an in
valuable facility for the university.

lost to a determined UNC-Charlotte team in a shootout after a
five minute overtime period. In the finals, Chris
Heidelberger and Russell Gruber netted second half goals tc
defeat UNC-Charlotte 2-1 and capture the tournament.
UNC controlled the tempo in the first half and jumped to s
1-0 lead when Arto Von Grondelle chipped in a lose ball ir
front of the net. Grondelle's shot was the only ball USC ]
keeper Chris Pfaeffle allowed in the net during the tour
nament, giving him a .20 goals allowed average for th(
weekend.
The Gamecocks woke up in the second half while UNC
seemed to tire out. Brian Murphy, Mike Devine, Jay Ballard
John Rutten and David Goodchild began playing tenaciou:
defense keeping UNC's offense at bay, and creating scoring
chances for Carolina's offense.

and USC II all tied for third in the round-robin portion of th<
tournament. George Purgavie, who ran the logistics of th
tournament, picked two names out of a hat and flipped a coil
between them and the two teams that were not picked to se
who would enter the semis. Erskine and USC II won the coi
tosses.
Tom Norton stole the opening kickoff, eluded two defer
ders, and slipped a shot under UNC-Charlotte keeper Davi
Higgins in seven seconds to give USC II an early lead. Vo
Grondelle tied the match toward the end of the first half on
direct kick from 25-yards out.
In the second half, UNC-Charlotte had a golden opportunit
to take the lead when Jeff Ponchot was called for a hand ba

"I thought the tournament went real well," Berson con

"The tournament was an excellent situation to study tl
players under a game situation," Berson continued. "Tl
