Women's swimming at the
University of South Carolina
is perhaps the most un
laiKea aDoui varsuy sport
which the university supports.
Despite the enigma of
being unrenowned, Head
Coach Steve Collins and the
lady Gamecocks Swim
Team have, in just two
years, produced national
rankins of eighth and 15th. In
addition to the national
rankings there have been 15
All-Americans, eight of
which have been repeats, a
total of 23 All-American
honors.
The 1981-82 edition of the
Lady Gamecocks Swim
i Team consists of seniors
Amy Gruenhagen and Beth
Wiltse, (a transfer from
American University). The
junior ciass is comprised 01
Sheryl Brosseau, Shelly
Cramer, Jude DeSando,
Kathy McPadden, Suzy
Reynolds and Julie Styles.
; Colleen Collins, Liz
Drosdick, Judi Richardson,
Nancy Silvers and Mary
Vereones are the five
, sophomores. Only two
I freshmen are on the
Carolina squad, Janic
Clarke and Maura O'Grady.
J
Collins and Liz Drosdick
are the two swimmers who
compete for the Lady
Gamecocks in the freestyle
i events. When it is time for
the sprint freestyles
; freshman Janice Clarke
takes over the swimming
chores.
The individual medleys
are anchored by DeSando,
Brosseau and Richardson.

Brosseau, Richardson and
Vereones form the trio who
swim in the breaststroke
event.
The buttlerfly event is the
forte of Cramer and Wiltse.
While the specialty of
O'Grady and Reynolds is
swimming in the backstroke
event. - Gruenhagen takes
charge when the distance
fftestyle is at center-state.
McPadden and Silvers both
share the spotlight when it
comes to diving. Stiles adds
the much needded depth in
both individual medleys and
the freestyle events.
Half of Carolina's returning
water-people earned
All-American status last
season. The All-Americans
returning from last season's
squad are Brosseau, Collins,
Cramer, DeSando, Drosdick
and Richardson. Reynolds
earned All-American honors
for the Gamecocks in 1980.
"We have a group of
juniors that will give us a lot
of leadership right now, a lot
of sophomores and two
freshmen, so we are very
young. Most of our people
are in their sophomore and
junior years, people who will
be counted on the most at the
NCAA (National Championships),"
Coach Steve
Collins said.
Heading into the National
Independent Championships
and the NCAA National
Championships has Collins
projecting a very positive
outlook. "Everything we do
now is in preparation for the
nationals. Right now, we are
in a good position heading
into our National Independent
Championships
and the NCAA National
Championships," Collins
said.

This season the Lady
Gamecocks have a record of
4-5 but finished tsecond in
the Southern Intercollegiate
Championships.
"We swam very well there
(the Southern Intercollegiate
and we have
been establishing some good
momentum coming into the
National Independent
Championships," Collins
said.
This season has had many .
highlights for the La(**>
Gamecocks. Collins feete
that the meet which helped
the squad the most was
against the University of
Tennessee. In the meet
adainct tho f Ho
M^UIIIUV Mil/ juK*uj vxanicvvA^fvo
found themselves trailing 358
halfway through the
match. Carolina then rallied
to a one-point victory.
"Against the University of
Tennessee is probably when
the girls really started to put
everything together,"
Collins said.
After the Tennessee meet
Carolina traveled up to
Raliegh, N.C. to take on
fifth-ranked North Carolina
State University. The
Wolfpack demolished
Carolina last year but this
season USC came home with
the victory.
The remaining meets left
for the 1981-82 season are the
National Independent
Championships, February
26-28. The NCAA prequalifying
diving meet will
> be held on March 12 and 13.
The Lady Gamecocks then
travel down to Gainesville,
Fla. for the NCAA National
Championships which will
run March 18-20. The U.S.
Swimming National
Championships run from
April 7 to the 10th.

One of the most positive aspects of the
1982 USC softball team is that the the women
put softball first in their lives, according to
Head Coach Terry Drake.
"They are hard workers and demand that
I work them hard every day," claims
Drake. "They put softball as number one in
their lives." She feels that this is very important,
and that many woman don't do this.
They put other things ahead of their sport,
and are thus more difficult/to coach.
The team has eight new members joining
the squad, which includes four freshmen
and four transfers. The freshmen are:
Robin Baxter, from Colonial Heights, Va.;
Shirley Burton, from Orlando, Fla.; and
Melissa Coulter, from Tauares, Fla.
The transfer students are: Jae Butera, a
sophomore from the University of Central
Florida; Louann Call, a sophomore from
Eastern Michigan; Jenny Sacco, a

Sonya Smith, from Orlando, Fla.
The junior team members are; Pat
Dufficy, from Hope Valley, R.I.; Amy
Lyons, from Ridgewood, N.J.; and Debbie
Rohr, from Vienna, Va.
The lone senior member of the squad is
Cindy Wallace, from Poquoson, Va. Wallace
will be one of Drakes top pitchers. "She's
not fast, but she has a lot of junk and variety
in her pitches," says Drake. Wallace is a
good fielding pitcher as well.
Drake will also be looking to Rohr, at
shortstop, and Lyon at second to lead her
team. She feels that their "shortstopsecond
base combination is one of the top in
the nation."
Dufficy, who is currently playing for the
Lady Gamecock basketball team as well as
the softball team, is Drake's utility player.
According to Drake, Dufficy "has the
potential to be an All-America infielder."
She has a lot of speed with a variety of
slides.
Drake is also looking to Dufficy to be one
of her top hitters, along with Lyons, James,
Burton, and Kish.
