Recruiting. The battle for blue chippers is waged before,
during and after the season. It's a necessary evil.
With all the uproar and publicity surrounding the departure
of Pam Parsons and five of her players from USC's
basketball team during mid-season, it would be easy to
believe that the Lady Gamecocks would have little success in
attracting star players to Carolina.
But that's not the case.

Tech while an assistant there and handled most of the
recruiting chores under Parsons during the first part of the
year, has a long list of players who are at least talking to
Carolina about next year.
Despite all the turmoil of January, Kelly said he has been
able to stress the future of the Carolina women's basketball
program, not the past.
"We're talking with recruits about the aspect that what
went on here is now in the past and it's not the present,
neither is it going to be the future," Kelly said.
Kelly, who has compiled a 12-G record since taking over for
Parsons, is unsure about how much the Lady Gamecock
recruiting efforts are being hampered by the mid-season
turmoil.
"As far as how much effect it is actually going to have,
that's hard to say at this point," Kelly said. "I'm sure it's
going to hurt, but at the same time I think they (recruits) are
taking a longer look at the University of South Carolina."

program but has also allowed potential USC players to notice
more of the school's better points.
Two in-state stars, Sharon Gilmore of Graniteville and
Jackie Jones of Charleston visited the campus and attended
the USC-Clemson basketball doubleheader on March 6.
Gilmore returned for the Memphis State game two weeks ago
and last Saturday's games with Notre Dame.
According to Kelly, Jones will apparently stay in state, and
will choose between Carolina or Clemson. Kelly recently
received some good news when Jones decided not to visit
Louisiana Tech and instead will decide between the Lady
Gamecocks and Lady Tigers.
Gilmore said she has only three schools on her list, USC,
Clemson and Tennessee. Gilmore said she should make her
decision sometime this weekend.
Kelly has had another hinderance in recruiting. Carolina
was put on a year's probation last season following Frannie

disqualification and subsequent forfeiture of
games she participated in because of a lack of "adequate"
academic progress.
"The limitations that we have for this year are that we as a
coaching staff cannot go off campus to see a high school
player play in a high school sanctioned event," Kelly said.
"That's probably the biggest thing."
Kelly can still correspond by mail and keep in touch by
telephone with blue chip prospects. Most of Kelly's Sunday
nights for the past several weeks have been spent on the
phone checking in with recruits. This Sunday will be a big
night because Monday is the first day letters of intent can be
mailed out for signature.
They must be returned to the prospective school and then
sent to the NCAA national office within two weeks or they are
invalid and another letter must be sent, Kelly said.
Most coaches have a priority list of players that have
already been told they have a scholarship if they want one.
Then there are the second line of players who are told by the
coaches that there is a definite interest in them, and a
scholarship could be tendered.
With only five scholarship players returning for next year,
Kelly has a large number of scholarships to offer. "I think
we're probably shooting right now for somewhere around
seven and eight scholarship players we'll bring in," Kelly
said.
Kelly will soon find out if his recruiting prowess is equal to
the talent he displayed keeping the Lady Gamecocks
together after the tumult of January and producing l'cC
unexpected 20-6 record.
