honored at the second annual "Salute to
Black South Carolinians" in the Russell
House Ballroom Feb. 18. The program was
sponsored by the Association of AfroAmerican
Students in recognition of Black

Two USC students were honored for their
academic accomplishments. Karon
Dawkins, a senior from Enore, was
honored. Dawkins is majoring in clinical
psychology and a member of the honor
society. She is also a member of the USC
Mortar Board honor society.

pharmacy, was also honored. McAlister is a
member of the National Honor Society and
is the correspondent secretary for Alpha Phi
Alpha and is a native of Darlington.
S.C. Rep. Kay Patterson was awarded in
the area of civics for his accomplishments

"We should know the place of blacks in
history," Patterson said. "Blacks have a
noble heritage."
Dr. Ralph Pughsley was awarded in the
field of business. Pughsley owned and
operated Pughsley's Pharmacy in Laurens
for 25 years. He encouraged blacks to
support black businesses. Pughsley is a
graduate 01 tseneaici college ana Aavier
University College of Pharmacy. He taught
science at Sanders High School in Laurens
and served on the coaching staff at Benedict

Also honored was Dr. James Soloman for
his contribution in education. Soloman told
students to "commit yourself to what you
feel is worthy of commitment."
Soloman is currently chairman of the
board of directors of the Columbia Urban
League, vice-chairman of the Columbia
committee for economic development
Soloman was the first black to be admitted
to graduate school at USC since

Afro was also recognized by Alpha Phi
Alpha for its outstanding leadership on
campus.
