TO THE EDITOR
This letter is in regard to
statements made by Mark
Platte in his column (Feb. 8)
concerning his recent trip to
Atlanta. Mr. Platte spoke of
a billboard in the downtown
area which read, "Beware,
you are in Atlanta where the
police are undermanned,
underpaid, underequipped."
The billboard also keeps a
running total of all murders
as of Jan. 1. Being an Atlanta
resident for the past ten
years, I would just like to
clarify a few of Mr. Platte's
v "facts" about my city.

First of all, the billboard of
which Mr. Platte speaks is
privately owned by what you
might call "a concerned

You said the "amazing
thing about Atlanta is the
way whites and blacks don't
interact unless they have
to." On what facts do you
base this statement? Do you
think that the downtown
business area is divided in
two sections: one white, one
black? Whites and blacks
may hang out on different
street corners but that's
irrelevant. Truly the
amazing thing about Atlanta
is how they do interact.
