Residents of Woodland Terrace
seem to like living there. Despite
some minor complaints, the
majority of people there like being
off-campus, are comfortable with
the apartments and given a choice,

The University of South Carolina
has decided that it would rather
sell Woodland Terrace and move
those residents to on-campus
housing. This poses several
problems.
Many of the residents have no
desire to move elsewhere and when
they signed the contract for
Woodland Terrace, assumed that
they could live there indefinitely.
What does that say for those who
have made living arrangements
off-campus? Do they automatically
have to move back on-campus or
look for other off-campus facilties?
It would be a different storv if
%/
people were desperately trying to
leave. They are not. The WT
residents hope only for the proper
respect they deserve. To be moved
out within the next two months
against their will is unfair.
Something has to be done.
We have received reports from
residents that flagrant repairs
nave not been made. The number
of fixtures, doors, windows etc.
that need repairs reads like a
laundry list. But yet, a number of
people choose to remain at WT
despite the repairs being ignored or
the rent rising periodically.
That should tell USC housing
officials something. It should
dictate loud and clear that WT
residents are loyal to their current
homes. It should also show that
Woodland Terrace should be saved
for both those who choose to
remain and pay rent and perhaps
upperclassmen who desire to live
off-eamnus.
Right now, there are a number of
vacant apartments that could

main reasons residents would like
to stay.

campus. The University must find
off-campus housing for students j
that isn't run-down. The 30 or so ;
vacant apartments could be easily I
rented out with a little repair and
innovation. ;
USC must be fair to the people
who have already made homes at
Woodland Terrace. Putting them
on a waiting list for on-campus
housing does not solve the
problems heaped upon them.
If Woodland Terrace residents
can put up with the roaches, shoddy
living conditions and improper
ventilation of their apartments,
perhaps USC can put up with

As this University accepts less
students, obviously less housing
will be needed for everyone. But
married students, graduate
students, law students and others
often need a place to live offcampus
and the alternative should
be provided. Woodland Terrace is
