NCAA Probati
Probation.
n s Decome a areaaea work in tne vocabulary of all college
sports enthusiasts.
It's become an omen for 15 colleges and universities so far
this year.
It's become a household word for the National Collegiate
Athletic Association.
It's a word that seems to be in the papers more than
"Reaganomics."
It's a rule that is needed, but a rule that should be straight
forward with no exceptions. Set down...enforced...no
questions asked.
Of the 15 current institutions on NCAA probation, nine are
on for improper recruiting, the most common violation for
^ 11 ? T : i ? ? '
cuucgcs. improper redlining inciuues exira piayer Deneiiis,
cash payments, free clothing, housing or promises of such
benefits. (These type violations have occured more than 20
times between 1978 and 1981). But of these nine, only four
have no sanctions against them.
Why should five schools be forced to endure no post-season
play until 1982 while others get off scott free with no sanctions
atall, even though they both did the same thing?
The rule of probation seems pretty flimsy.
Why shouldn't the University of Colorado, Southern
Methodist, West Texas State and the University of Wisconsin
at Madison face the same probation penalties as Arkansas
State, UCLA and the University of Miami since they committed
the same infraction? Instead, the first four get off
with no sanctions leveled, while the rest must suffer through
two years of no post- season competition.

vjicuneu, suuic icuiuumg viuictnuub are inure severe man
others, but a violation is a violation. A broken rule is broken
? not partially, but fully. Either recruit properly or face
probation. Forget the in between stuff. If you break the rules,
you should be subjected to fines and penalties no matter
what.
No post season competition seems to be a favorite penalty
