Chinese Studenl
By JULIE JAMESON
Staff Writer
USC Chinese exchange students are preparing for their
favorite holiday--the Chinese New Year. This celebration
begins today with red lanterns, fireworks and the traditional
New Year's dinner of rice flour dumplings.

She has a tape from her family in China. "I listen to it one
time each day," she said.
Huang Peng-Chun, a physical chemistry student, said, "I
hope American people will have a good time with us."
The language barrier has been the main problem for the
Chinese students. Xu Jing had English in middle school and
took a one month course before coming to USC. "I could
hardly speak English." Xu Jing has been at USC for four
months and said it is difficult to communicate. She audits her
courses because she cannot follow her teacher. She is taking
Oral Communications in English.

Huang Peng-Chun said, "I feel a language shock." He told
of trying to find a certain type paper he needed for his
chemistry course. "The clerk was very helpful but it was
aiincuit to communicate." Huang said he applied to live with
an American family or student so he could learn more about
the culture and the language but he was turned down.
Twenty faculty members from three institutions came to
Columbia to study the English language teaching methods,
natural sciences, computer science and engineering. The
Chinese scholars are expected to be here for two years.
"I like the Thomas Cooper Library the most," said Xu
Jing, "I've never seen such a beautiful library. I spend all my
spare time there. I'm very impressed by the service of the
library. I needed some information on mutation research,
and they were able to get a copy from Charleston. I was very
grateful."
Xu Jing works at Environmental and Health services with
Dr. Edward Oswald doing research on genetic toxicology.
They perform micronucleus tests to detect cancerous *
mutations in industry and the environment.
Yan Ju-Rang, a mathematics student, lias published two
papers on ordinary differential equations in China. He hopes
to have another paper finished in a year.
Yan said his situation for studying is much better. "There
is more information available, and I work closely with
faculty, unlike in China."

a lot on T.V." Although the students do not have a car, they
go shopping and frequently are taken around by USC faculty
members.
Huang Peng-Chun said, "The weather is very warm in
Columbia and so are the people."
