Top Runners Ertter Carolina
Marathon
Russ Pate, Carolina Marathon director, announced that
some of the Southeast's top male and female runners have
registered to run in this year's Carolina Marathon, scheduled
for Saturday, Feb. 13.
Headlining the event is Atlanta native Lee Fidler, winner ^
of the 26.2 mile event in 1978 and 1979. Last year's winners, w
Bicky Timus of Anderson, and Colleen Joiner from Georgia
State University have also been invited to compete in the
race.
The race is the oldest and largest 26.2 mile race in the state
and one of the premier road races in the Southeast. It is
coordinated with the assistance of the Governor's Council of
Physical Fitness. Additional support and sponsorship is

Runners Choice, the Richland Northeast, Fort Jackson, the
City of Columbia and the City of Forest Acres.
The race will begin in downtown Columbia at Lady and
Sumter streets at 9 a.m. The course travels through many of $
Columbia's neighborhoods, the University of South Carolina
campus, Shandon, Lake Katherine, Fort Jackson, Trenholm
and Heathwood, before finishing at the Blatt PE Center on
Wheat Street.

meter (3.1 mile) race will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Trenholm

Fidler, in addition to winning the Carolina Marathon twice,
has frequently competed in the Governor's Cup races,
winning the 5-mile race in recent years and finishing second 1
in the 198115-mile race behind David Branch.
Local runners George Hallman and John Purvis are also
scheduled to compete. TV newsman John Wrisley has also ?
registered to run in the event.
Joiner, a 19-year-old student at Georgia State is the

time of 2:52:51. The 5-2, 92-pound girl will be challenged by
Valerie Nye of Washington, D.C., who won the 1980 race.
Pate said, "We expect nearly 500 runners to register for the
marathon and hundreds more to participate in the 5,000
meter run. The continuing support of Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of South Carolina has allowed us to strengthen and
expand an already strong race organization and race ^
program. We are looking forward to Feb. 13 and all of the
activities surrounding it."
