"Yeah, he was a big
reason," Martin said. "I
think of him as a coach, an
advisor, a friend. I say we're
a whole familv You ran talk
to him like a father."
Martin knows what USC's
basketball team will be like
this year. "We've got a lot of
power on the boards,"
Martin pointed out.j "We've <
got a lot of quick big men and
the guards are quick. The
guards, we tell each other
what to do. We're just like
brothers."
A good shooting guard,
Martin also likes to go to the
boards.
"Yeah, I like to get in
there," Martin grinned.
"Most big men don't let you
in there, but you gotta' slide
in there somehow."
One of the team's most
experienced players is
Henry Atkins. Atkins is one
of the few players who
played under Frank
McGuire. Obviously, there is
a difference between Foster
and McGuire.
"Coach Foster runs the
ball more and there is a
much faster tempo," Atkins
informed. "Coach McGuire
ran a more patterned offense.
"In McGuire's last year,"
Atkins recalled, "there were
a 101 01 ouisiae aisiracuons.
And 1 guess there was a lot of
adversity. It was a different
situation last year with
Coach Foster bringing in a
new system."
Atkins, a Charlotte native,
went to prep school for a
year before moving to
Carolina. Being only 6-0, he

knew he wouldn't be
recruited too heavily.
However, he has made the
team three straight years.
This year, he is optimistic.
",We will be inexperienced
at first, but the outlook is
real good," Atkins said.
"Things look better next
year and the year after that.
"There will be a lot more

observedV'We only had four
big men who played last
year, and this year, we've
got seven.
"Even though we'll be
inexperienced, as the season
goes on, the freshmen will
get more experience and the
team will get better and
better.
"Coach Foster is a great
coach," Atkins complimented.
"He just works

every aspect of coaching.
He's gonna build a winner,
no doubt."
Scott Sanderson is looking
for a bigger role in the
Gamecocks' season.
"I think I've got a good
chance to start," Sanderson
said. "I started two games
last year and played about
lu-ib mmuies a game, i warn
to do more this year."
Sanderson's father' Wimp'
is the head coach at the
University of Alabama.
There was a little father-son
discussion when it came
time for Scott to choose
colleges.
"I felt if I went there and
played, people would say it
was because I was his son,"
Sanderson related. "If I
weni mere ana aian i piay,
I'd have been mad."

Like most other freshmei,
the deciding factor in Sau
derson's choosing USC was
Coach Foster.
"I know he will build a
winner here and I wanted to
be in the thick of things.''

"We call out the offenses
and defenses and
everything. I believe they're
looking on me to score more

Last year, the Gamecocks
finished 17-10, yet received
no postseason bid.
4<I think everybody's goal
this year is to go to a postseason
tournament. Last
year, we thought we
should've went."
Sanderson, who hails from
Tuscaloosa, Ala., is very
optimistic and knows what
the Gamecocks strengths'
are.
we Deneve anytime we
go out on the court, we have
a chance to win. You can't go
out there to keep the score
down. We've got our big
men back, and they're
improved a lot over last
year. But everybody's improved
since last year.
"Anri wp know what Conrh
Foster wants of us."
Terry Small is built for
football. As a matter of fact,
more colleges were interested
in his ability as a
defensive back than as a guy

Which sport does Small
prefer?
"Basketball," he said. "I
used to like football more,
but now I like basketball."
Small, a walk-on who lives
in the Roost, pays his own
tuition while the athletic
department gives him the
room. What if Head Football
Coach Jim Carlen walked in
onH r?fforr?H him a full
scholarship, tuition and
everything? Would he take
it?
"No, I don't think so,"
Small grinned. "I like
basketball and Coach
Foster."
Small is another member
of the Bill Foster Fan Club.
"I think he's great, man,"
Small praised. "He's got so
many ways to get the best
out of you. He's a real
straight-up guy."
The biggest adjustment
Small had to make from the
gridiron to the court was
changing his muscles. Yes,
he had to "change" his
muscles.
"You have to use different
muscles for each sport,"
Small related. "I had to lose
weight. My shoulders were

Small likes this year's '
team and its prospects.
"Last year, we always I
looked to Zam (Fredrick)," 1
Small cited. "Now, it will be
a different person every
night. It just depends who is "
hot. It's more than a one- or
two-man show, and that's
what makes this team
special."
Now, we come to Gerald
Peacock. It will be Peacock
running the show, not
Fredrick, although the
romnarisons are imminent.
"I learned to relax playing
under 21am," Peacock said.
"The man was always
relaxed before a game. He
took every game the same. I
didn't do that last year, but
I'm gonna this year."
The criminal justice major
from Raleigh, N.C. knows
that some people might
expect him to play like
Fredrick. But he won't fall
into the trap of trying to be
Zam Fredrick. He'll just
worry about being Gerald
Peacock.
"I won't pattern myself
after Zam," Peacock said.
"He could jump. Man, he
had a vertical (jump) of
about 34"."
Peacock, a junior college
transfer from Brevard J.C.
in Fla., has some goals he is
shooting for.

Peacock stresses the team I
aspect of the game as being
most important. j
"We have more depth this I
year," Peacock said. "And
we have a more balanced
scoring attack. Going
percentages, if we play ou^^
game and do what we've
been taught, I think we'll
come out with a pretty I
impressive record.
Peacock has one thing he
wants to do personally ? cut
down on turnovers. "I think
that I have to cut down on
turnovers," he admitted.
"My goal is two per game. 1
The more chances we have
to score, the better we'l^J
come out.
"Plus, being in the
backcourt, my turnovers
come closer to the other
basket and there's not
anybody behind me.
"I also want to be more
offensive minded, which I
will be. I have to look for the
open shot more, and I will.
"If I can do that, then I car^
contribute to the team."
The players are all confident
about the team this
year, and that's half the
battle ? knowing you can do
it.
