The 1981 soccer season for USC ended last
weekend at the Graveyard and for the first
time all year the home team was on the low
9 end of the score.
However, one game aoes noi a season
make, as was once said, and what a season
the Gamecocks put together. Carolina
finished with a 16-4-1 record against the
toughest schedule in the team's four year
history, losing only to nationally ranked
opponents. When you look at the stats you
cannot see what the Gamecocks had to deal
with on the way to what Coach Mark Berson
calls the most successful season in the
sixjctu leam i> msiury.
L
JP Freshman Chris Pfaeffle came to
Carolina as the third string goalie and ended
Iup starting the last 10 games of the season,
sporting a 1.16 goals against average.
"Chris was put in a tough situation and did
a great job," senior stopper and team
captain John Nitardy commented.
Pfaeffle took over for Keith Mallon who
suffered a case of homesickness and headed

from a severely sprained ankle, was given a
little more time to recuperate as defensive
back Hoy Dunshee, with no previous experience,
played two games in net. Both
were shutouts.
"They accomplished a great deal this
season," Berson said about the team.''This
year was the best season we ever had and
we overcame a tremendous amount of
adversity to do so," he continued.
While the Gamecock defense kept nine
opponents from scoring in a game Carolina
established an offense that came into its
own late in the season. Before the loss to
tN.C. State, Carolina battered opponents
with 26 goals during their seven game
winning streak.
Forward Tom Reilly led the scoring attack
with six goals during the seven game
streak, putting his scoring total for the
season at a team leading 11.
Reilly showed his scoring potential

Norton hasnine goals and five assists on the
year.

the 1981 squad will be returning next year in '
what promises to be a season that will be
even better than this year's success.
Carolina will have seven seniors on the 1982
club and a group of rising sophomores that
Berson expects to see a lot from next year. i
Those showing promise are Tom Rumble, l
who helped in the backfield, Chip Cooney,
forward John Lusch, who donated three
goals and one assist to the Gamecocks cause,
and midfielder Lance Van Winter, who

season according to Berson.
Fans at the Graveyard can expect to see a
more experienced team with plenty of
depth.
441 expect us to be a NCAA contender next
year," sweeper Eric Hawkes said. <4I think
that anything less will be a disappointment
for us," Hawkes continued. The junior
sweeper from Ellicott City, Md. pointed out
that the major weakness on this year's
squad was their inability to "win the big
games in the South." Hawkes attributed it to
a lack of experience on the club, one of the
assets the Gamecocks will have in '82.
With the entire front line returning and
midfielders David Burr, who lead the team
is assists with eight and David Goodchild,
who proved he could play midfielder, forward,
and defensive back, and freshman
sensation Tim Berra all coming back
Berson does not expect to do much
recruiting in the off season.
He did say that he will look for a keeper to
help Pfaeffle out in the event that goalie
Glen Thompson is unable to come back from
a back injury. Berson will also be looking for
an outstanding individual scorer which he
says will take some pressure off of the rest
of the team.
Nitardy and midfielder Mike Mousaw will
no longer be wearing the Gamecock jerseys
which Berson says will be a great loss.
Nitardy hopes to remain with the club with a
coaching job if possible.
"My experience here was great. I couldn't
be happier with my decision to go to USC,
and I hope to continue to be a part of next
year," Nitardy commented.
