News tditor Campus security underwent another change Monday as several officers ? were assigned to new positions. Lt. Ken Pereira was named head of uniform police. Lt. Chief Marvin Harrelson has been stationed at Coastal Carolina temporarily to set up a police force. The move is the latest in a ? series of actions by Law ^ f ? ? * o ^ r ~ , JTj li I U I i; L' 11H' IU Director Carl Stokes in an attempt to improve the force's reputation and effectiveness. "This arrangement will give us a better handle on what's going on now and will help us better meet the problems we've faced in the past," Stokes said. ^ Burgin will be in charge of w establishing a central records system as well as being in charge of the n n /4 rf 11 n o in Kin diuuciii guai no in mi residential halls, Stokes said. Sanders said he has no immediate changes planned for the investigative section. Pereira said there will be changes in the uniform section although he doubts they will be dramatic. "We're still getting initiated to the new position so I'm not quite sure yet what is going to happen," Fereira said. Pereira said his objective is to bring a better training program to c a mpus # security. | "Carl Stokes started the improved training program and hopefully we'll be able to take it even farther," Pereira said. Pereira head of uniform police. ; Security is Changes Stokes implemented a program earlier in the year where one police officer was designated as the training officer for officers after they leave the police academy. Stokes said the training officer was necessary because there were some things a campus police officer needs to know that aren't taught at the academy. The officer may also be in charge of the force's physical fitness program. Pereira said he would continue to run the parking division as it would move its headquarters to the police station, but vehicle registration will remain at the Pendleton Street Garage. Stokes said Burgin, Fereira and Sanders would all report to him through Ernie Ellis who has been named deputy director of campus security. rne cnange is one step in a series of improvements Stokes has been implementing to better attitudes towards campus police and the attitude of the police force. Stokes took over as director of campus security in r euruary wnen ueorge Key resigned as director of security after 12 years. The resignation followed six months of turmoil at the police department caused by a June 1980 report by a special com missio n criticized the campus police. Stokes has changed the campus police to permanent shifts, separated his office trom the campus police by moving to the James F.
