Pereira said there will be
changes in the uniform

they will be dramatic.
"We're still getting
initiated to the new position
so I'm not quite sure yet
what is going to happen,"
Fereira said.
Pereira said his objective
is to bring a better training

Stokes implemented a
program earlier in the year
where one police officer was
designated as the training
officer for officers after they
leave the police academy.
Stokes said the training
officer was necessary
because there were some
things a campus police officer
needs to know that
aren't taught at the
academy. The officer may
also be in charge of the
force's physical fitness
program.
Pereira said he would
continue to run the parking
division as it would move its
headquarters to the police
station, but vehicle
registration will remain at
the Pendleton Street
Garage.
Stokes said Burgin,
Fereira and Sanders would
all report to him through
Ernie Ellis who has been
named deputy director of
campus security.
rne cnange is one step in a
series of improvements
Stokes has been implementing
to better attitudes
towards campus
police and the attitude of the
police force.
Stokes took over as
director of campus security
in r euruary wnen ueorge
Key resigned as director of
security after 12 years.
The resignation followed
six months of turmoil at the
police department caused by
a June 1980 report by a
special com missio n
criticized the campus police.
Stokes has changed the
campus police to permanent
shifts, separated his office
trom the campus police by
moving to the James F.
Byrnes Center and appointed
a training officer in
attempts to improve the
force.
