wnen people at use need
glass blown, they go to Bill
Caldwell.
He is manager of the glass
blowing shop, part of the
chemistry department, on
the fourth floor of the
Physical Sciences Center.
Primarily, Caldwell and
his apprentice of five years,
Curt Sexton, make ;entific
ciiud iui ri, searcn
from glass. The; serve
departments such as marine
science, geology,
engineering and the medical
school. They also teach
scientific glass blowing.
Items made range from
helium dewars, which are
thermos bottles used in
research of liquid helium, to
vacuum systems, which are
used for work with airsensitive
compounds.
Mostly they use boro
silicatic glass, which is
pyrex glass. But they also
use other glasses such as
fused quartz and soft glass,?
the kind of ?, ass that windows
are made of.
Caldwell and Sexton are
called scientific glass
blowers because they mostly
work on the bench using the
hand-to-mouth glass blowing
method. They use an oxygenand-gas
torch to mold the
glass into the desired shape.
While the bench method is
used for smaller pieces of I
glass, larger pieces require I
the glass lathe to be used. |

and molded it goes into the
anneling oven to relieve any
stress in the glass so that no
breakage or cracking occurs.
All the glass is bought in
the shape of tubing or rods
and the molding is done from
that. The size ranges from
two millimeters outside
diameter to 175 milimeters
(about 6.6 inches) diameter.
Caldwell has been blowing
glass for 18 years and has
been with USC 12 years,
starting out as the first fulltime
glass blower the
university had.

"The work is the mosl
frustrating, but also the
most fascinating," saic
Caldwell. "I've nevei
minded the work. There's
variation, it's always i
constant challenge, and not i
whole lot of people doing it."
Caldwell didn't know h<
would be blowing glass whei
he left the military in 1963.
,4I must have been in th<
