misquote, just like coaches never overestimate an opponent
in print.
Carlen has no love for the Columbia media. "By the time
we get to Columbia, the Columbia press will have North
Carolina not a very good football team," Carlen said

One writer picked against USC in their last two road games
at Kentucky and North Carolina. With a slight trace of
smugness Carlen reminded him of his predictions.4'You keep
picking against us/' Carlen laughed last Saturday, "I love it.
4'I don't blame him for picking against us. We got people
picking us to get blown out of the tub. I'll be interested to see
what they can write Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
whenever they write."
Carlen blames a loser's syndrome among USC fans for the
start and spread of rumors of his departure, but still maintains
they are, in his words, "the greatest fans in the world."

f they'll just get off the rumor mill. If they'll just ease off the
rumor mill long enough to give us some breathing room.
"One minute they're saying 'we gotta get rid of him
because he cant coach' and the next minute ? five minutes
later ? the same guy is saying 'boy, he's going somewhere. A
good school.' Carolina's a good school. Carolina's a great
school."
"It's taken awhile for the fans to quit thinking that bad
things are going to happen."

fans. To say he is the type of person that is either loved or
hated by fans is not dogmatic truth, but it's not too far from
reality. And just as there are various types of coaches and
sports reporters, there are different types of fans.
