Honest Mistake
The telephone calls started almost immediately.
Friday moroinff. after the Gamecock nut out its Oct M
edition, all kinds of people were calling to complain that in
the "Homecoming 1961" section, the pictures of Mona
Diaz and Karon Dawkins were placed above the wrong
names and beside the wrong stories.
I When told that a correction would be run, some of the
angry callers became vehement and demanded to know
why the Gamecock intentionally switched the pictures.

charged that this paper, being primarily of an all-white
staff, had made its mistake because we wanted to ensure
a white homecoming queen would win.

what would be done to rectify the situation. When told a I
correction would be run in the following paper (today),
.she asked why we couldn't put out a special issue Friday
afternoon with the correct photos and names. 1
An AFRO member came up to the Gamecock office
and demanded to know how a mistake could be made like
the one in Friday's paper. Having been the editor of his
: high school newspaper, he asserted that everything in his
papers were checked with other sources to insure that no
;! mistakes would be made. His newspaper appeared four
urnes a year.
NEEDLESS to say, the comments that we received are
not only confused rantings of people who have no idea that
honest mistakes can indeed be made, but those racial
barriers that we all hoped would some day ebb just a little
; are still in evidence today.
It seems that while people deny that prejudice continues
| to overtake them, situations like this.one rear their ugly
heads to convince us that things will never be any different
as long as ignorance persists.
Let it be known in this editorial that whoever wins the
position of Homecoming Queen, that USC female will not
be featured on the front page of the Nov. 2 newspaper. The
| Gamecock felt it would be doing the Homecoming Committee
a great favor by devoting ope-t^ird of a 12 page
paper to homecoming. As it stands now, there's very little
| chance we'll do the same in the future.
To the people who leveled the criticisms and those who
are preparing to draft letters to the editor, there is one
message we'd like to emphasize: It's too bad you have to.
see everything in terms of black and white; colorblindness
mixed with racial misconceptions hurts all of
