It has not been a particularly good season for Dick Bestwick.
In fact, it's probably one that the Cavalier coach would F
just as soon forget. Bestwick's Virginia football program, it
seems, has shifted into reverse after a successful (by UVA a
standards) 6-5 season in 1979. The Cavs slumped to 4-7 last \
year, and with an 0-5 mark thus far this season, even a repeat
of last year's record now stands a tall order.
The poor start, however, has not had a negative effect on s
his players according to Bestwick. "It has made them more
determined if anything," he says. "Determined to win one t

Special breed or not, many of the Cavaliers' key players
will watch the game from the sidelines. "We have injury d
problems everywhere, even more so than South Carolina I s
think," Bestwick laments. "Our whole defensive backfield is t
out, and now even one of the replacements is out." I
OTHER VIRGINIA casualties include starting quar- *
terback Todd Kirtley and leading ground gainer Quentin h
Walker. Walker had been rushing the ball at 7.5 yards a
carry, while Kirtley was the only established signal caller on d
the team. These two injuries have prayed heavily on Best- a
wick, especially Walker's. "Anytime you lose a back like that
it hurts," the six-year UVA coach stated. "It would be like
South Carolina losing Rogers...he's that calibre of a back. C
tie s not as Dig as Kogers, out ne runs a 4.5 40 and weighs 200 ^
pounds. He had a 53-yard run against Duke on one leg." t?
While Bestwick never coached against Rogers, his point is b
well made. He's lost some very key people during the course
of the season, and at Virginia, depth charts are not usually v

"IN THOSE RESPECTS, they're a lot like Clemson...outtanding
on defense."
Bestwick recognizes the fact that the Gamecocks had their
rouble on offense earlier in the season, but he's afraid that's
>ehind them.
"Early in the year, I think the offense...made it hard on the
lefense, but they're more consistent now," he noted. "They .
eem to have solidified with Beckham. I understand that
heir other quarterback is an outstanding athlete, but
Jeckham has brought them together." i
On Beckham, the Virginia coach didn't have to review
nany films for familiarization. "We really tried to get hinqf <

AS FAR AS his own team is concerned, Bestwick says the
'avaliers will do nothing special in preparation for the
iamecocks, just "keep trying to improve as a football
