When Stiver first arrived
at the USC campus, 1965
there were only five
members in the philosophy
department. 4 4 We have
expanded three times as
much." Although a number
of the philosophy majors
have not increased, the
students in the courses have.
"Many students take our
| logic course as a substitute
for math," says Stiver.
Stiver said he would not have
philosophy as a requirement

courses to teach is Contemporary
Moral Issues
which touches upon controversial
tonics such as
capital punishment, abortion
or the economic injustice."
Stiver also believes that the
logic course is a good
background for law school
where analyzing and critical
arguments are important.
Stiver says, "To be a good
teacher you have to like
people. You have to establish
a mutual res Dec t between
students and teachers." He
also said, "you have to love
the subject. You have to
prove you're not going
through the motions."
Stiver was "gratified to
receive the award," but said
that there are many worthy
professors. "I suppose it was
a bit of luck," he said.
Stiver did his undergraduate
work at Yale
University and did his
graduate studies at Chapel
Hill in North Carolina. USC
was his first teaching
assignment and he says he
will stay here. "I like
Columbia, the people and the
students."
