Building, intent on carrying a peace message to the U.N.
Once in New York, (estimated date of arrival is Oct.
24? United Nations Day) the North bound caravan will be
joined by three other caravans from the Midwest and
Canada to form a group of concerned individuals who wish
to speak out against nuclear power.
The organization of the protest is efficient and the intentions
are noble. According to Michael Gooding, a
member of the USC chapter of the Palmetto Alliance
which joined the North-bound caravan Monday, the
decision to form the caravan was made after Reagan
decided to produce the nuetron bomb.
THAT DECISION, as Gooding pointed out, does place
the value of property over the value of human life. In
addition, the nuetron bomb is unnecessary; America has
more than enough weapons. If money has to be spent for
defense it should be spent on modifying and improving
existing arms.
Spending money on diabolical new weapons only increases
suspisions between major powers and adds to
arms-race tensions.
Perhaps an argument could be made in favor of
progress, yet, as in the case of the nuetron bomb, progress
means little when dedicated to extinguishing human life.
HOPEFULLY, the caravans will make an impact and
someone will be listening. When dealing with controversy
of this nature, old arguments are still fresh and deserve
to be re-hashed.
