"ONCE a guy came in, sat at a booth and started sobbing.
He pulled out a razor and started raking himself with the
blade. He didn't feel it. Then he started cutting at me.
"There was blood all over me and the booth and the
customers. He was spurting blood like a fountain," Tate said.
Tate said he once visited a friend working the late shift.
' 'Some dude was hanging out the door swinging his knife and
(Tate's friend) was waiting behind the counter with a hntJ
cher knife."
Despite the violence he has seen, Tate said he does not fear
being attacked. "I've never really thought about it. I've
' always been a person not afraid of anything. At least I try to
be. I figure if it's going to happen, it'll happen."

Tate, Pawlaczyk and Popielarczyk agreed that most latenight

Pawlaczyk said, "Ninety five percent of the the customers
are really nice people."
Tate said, "There are a lot of friendships made on this
shift. There are a lot of regular customers? they're who pays
for this place."
PAWLACZYK added, "The postman goes down the line

Popilarczyk adds that Fred "will go out of his way to help
anyone. He really will."
Understanding customers are sometimes necessary on the
late shift when only one person is working. Tate said a
worker on the late shift has to be "a person with rhythm and (
timing who doesn't get upset if he gets a little rushed. I never
really get upset. I just try to keep it going." oi
