Springing up around the USC campus are
several new works of art. This in itself is not
that extraordinary; what makes these
paintings different is their size and location.

buildings.
Many USC students are familiar with the
George Rogers mural on the Booker T.
Washington Building and the train depot
painted on the Ben Arnold Building on
Gervais Street. The artist, Roger Waltrup,
has created many other murals. But
Waltrup's assistant is a USC student ?
Reggie Tolbert. A junior majoring in Art,
Tolbert applied for the job and after an
interview became WaltruD's assistant
Painting a mural is a rather complex job.
First a drawing is made in exact proportion
to the surface being used. The drawing is
then broken down into sections and

the mural, one does not have to be an artist
to actually paint. The artist can explain
what needs to be done and others can carry
out the tedious task of actually painting the
wall. Close-up the mural does not appear to
have any form. It is only as you move away
from the wall that the true picture is formed.

on the mural is starting this week. Tolbert
says that in the future he would like to
continue to paint murals. He is not sure yet
whether this will become a career but he
will always be interested in the creation of
the enormous paintings. USC is lucky to
have such talented students to continually
