With Pitt leading Carolina 42-7 midway
through the third quarter, the game was
supposed to be over. But someone forgot to
tell the Gamecocks.
A fight that led to the ejection of a USC
and a Pitt player sparked a Gamecock
comeback, as the offense got on a roll and
turned an apparent blow into a respectable
42-28 loss to the fourth-ranked Panthers.
"In the first half, without any reservations,
their (Pitt's) defensive line overwhelmed
us," USC Head Football Coach

a total of 10 times during the game.
"The line of scrimmage was the tale of the
game," Carlen said. "We spent more time
on the throwing game than we ever had, but
it's still not coming through.
"I think the difference in football is the
offensive line. Very few teams have a solid
offensive line. Our shortcoming without any
reservations richt now. is our offensive line
We're scrambling and it's not a case of lack
of effort," Carlen continued.
"I thank the fans, the students, Man, they
hung in there and hollered" Carlen said.
"You can't beat that, but I'mnot happy with
a loss if that's what people are asking. No
way." _

PITT COACH JACKIE Sherrill credited t
the Carolina fans with the comeback. "They
hung m there ana gave mem support ana
turned it around. A lot of places, when it's 42 f
points, they'll leave the stadium," he said. f
"The first half was certainly no contest
whatsoever," the Pitt helmsman com- I
mented. "In the second half, however,
Carolina exploded. ;

momentum," Sherrill said. "I thought the
second half lasted four hours. We just didn't j
maintain the football, control the football,
and use the clock up, and that's what you've
got to do."
The first half was a lopsided affair. The I
Panthers rolled up 12 first downs compared
to the Gamecock's one, and had 275 total !
offensive yards while the Gamecocks had -7. |

give Pitt a 28-0 advantage going into halftime.
Marino finished the game with 346
yards passing, completing 24 of 39 with two
interceptions.

coming along,"USC middle guard Emanuel
Weaver said. "Well, we, (the defense)
weren't doing what we were supposed to be
doing and let them get 42 points against us."

Gamecock Quarterback Gordon Beck
prepares to pass Saturday afternoon. Be<
contest.
"It should let us know we should never
wait for the offense to make something
happen; we should go out and make
something happen," the 6-4, 225-pounder
added.
USC offensive tackle Chuck Slaughter
said that despite Beckham getting sacked 10
times, he thought the offensive line played
pretty good.
"I DON'T THINK our blocking was that
bad," Slaughter said. "Pitt was bringing
eight men at times and we only have five
offensive linemen.
"I think that we have a lot of pride and we
never gave up, and finally turned the corner."
Slaughter continued. "I think the
iiictiii siiui we iietsueu was <x &nui ui confidence
and we got that."
While Slaughter and Weaver played
outstanding games, the afternoon really
belonged to Gordon Beckham. Besides Pitt,
that is.
