It's amazing what a team must do to fire itself up durin
the course of a game.
Lone touchdown Dasses will do it. Crushing quarterbac
sacks also can spark teams to comebacks. Of course
altercations can make teams forget about a lack of cor
fidence and get things going. Such was the case at Williams
Brice Stadium Saturday.
Fourth-ranked Pittsburgh showed why it is one of the to
teams in the country bv moving out to a 35-0 lead early in th
third quarter en route to a 42-28 win over South Carolim
quarterback Dan Marina held a seminar in throwing undc
pressure, completing 24-of-39 passes for 346 yards and si
touchdowns.
The defensive line of Pitt held the Gamecocks to minus E
yards rushing and sacked quarterback Gordon Beckham 1
times for minus 104 yards.
Yet, a "disagreement" between Carolina guard C<3
Danielowski and Pitt defensive tackle Phil Puzzuc
awakened the Gamecock fans and ignited the offense.

Quarterback Gordon Beckham, whose performance (1
for-34, 235 yards and three touchdowns) almost assured hi:
of the quarterback spot for a while, also saw the play as a b
one.
"It did get us pumped up a little bit," Beckham said. "B
we don't need to rely on that for help. We ought to be fired i
anyway.

:r A reporter asked Danielowski in a kidding manner if the
x Columbia native learned anything from the incident. "Well,'
Danielowski said with a smile, "it's a good way to gel

LO The Gamecocks had managed only one first down wher
Danielowski and Puzzouli mixed it up. In the next twentj
?s minutes, they got 11.
li Is the offense untracked now, ready to get going?
"I hope we've turned the corner," Slaughter said. "I car
