There are two things going on in Barnwell S.C. that v/e
question the ethics about. One is the law process that
surrounds the recent trial of a man and a woman who

mind of the trial's defense attorney, Solomon Blatt.
Over the weekend, a 37-year-old man named Billie Joe j
Stewart and a 40-year-old woman named Gloria Jean

ticipation in sex crimes against four girls, aged 12 to 16. I
STEWART GOT three years in jail, was suspended on
service of three months on weekends, levied a $1,500 fine
and given five year's probation. Hair was given a threeyear
jail term, suspended on service of 60 days and
received probation for five years.
Unfortunately, politics in this state has a good bit to do
with justice and this courtroom case is a good example.
Blatt, 86, speaker emeritus of the South Carolina House of
Representatives, needed only to make an empassioned
nlea for lieht sentencing and it was as good as done.
After Stewart pleaded guilty to contributing to the
delinquency of minors and criminal conspiracy, one of the
victim's older brothers leaped across the railing in the
courtroom and knocked Stewart down on the defense
table. The court was in an uproar and now the town of
Blackville, where the acts took place is even angrier.
BLATT HAS HAD too much say, not only in every issue
that hits this state but now down to individual rights. It's a
shame that people still believe the man has anything to
contribute to society and still think that he is just a step
under God. ?
Even worse, the Blatt name plagues this university like
a gargantuan locust. Everytime USC is mentioned, Blatt's

It's time USC frees itself of a man so devoid of scruples
that he'd try to implicate young girls in these Blackville
sex crimes. Blatt's been showing his age lately and acting
like an old man. It's high time this state moves out of his
shadow and on its own feet.
