USC soccer coach Mark
Berson announced Monday
that goalkeeper Keith
Mallon has left the team and
returned to his home in St.
Louis, Mo.
Mallon, a junior college
transfer from Meramec
Community College in St.
Louis, cited personal
reasons for his departure.
The junior goalie had played
every minute of Carolina's
first eight games and
recorded three shutouts. His
goals-against average was
1.00.
"Obviously I'm disr-v
pointed in Keith's decision to
leave," Berson said Monday.
' He has played every
minute of every game in goal
for us and done a good job.
He was also doing well in an
of his classes academically.
"This is a tremendous
blow to our soccer team
since we have no players
with any varsity experience
in the goal," Berson added.
"Keith was homesick. It
was a difficult decision for
him to make and it's one
nobody on our soccer team
foresaw. But the door is open

for his return if he can work
it out."
The loss of Mallon created
a crucial hole in a problem
area for the team.
Freshman goalkeeper
Chris Pfaeffle, who has not
played a game this season, is
nagged by an ankle injury
sustained in USC's recent
road trip to Connecticut.
Mike Brewer, a junior
varsity walk-on from
Columbia's Airport High,
and Roy Dunshee, a starter
on defense for the
Gamecocks in their first
eight games, are other backup
goalies.
"As far as the Furman
game goes, I really don't
know who'll play now,"
Berson said prior to
Tuesday's 4 p.m. contest
against Furman in Greenville.
"I've said all along that
mis team is a ireint-uuous
group of competitors and
that we'd be in the running
for regional honors this
year," the coach added.
"This is just going to be
another challenee for us as
we head in that direction."
