Rush enrollment among white sororities at USC has
declined 18 percent this year, according to Paula Barclay,
acrnser to tne Fanhellenic Association, the governing body of
the sororities.
The number of freshmen pledging sororities declined by 13
percent from last fall's rush, and upper-classmen enrollment
drooned 2fi n^rrpnt
BARCLAY attributes the decline to failure to adequately
publicize fall rush.
"We should have done more recruitment," she said.
"Many girls didn't know about it (rush) because there wasn t
enough publicity."
Rush, which lasted for about two weeks, began before
classes started this year ? unlike last year, when the parties
began after school had started. This may have presented a
problem for women who wanted to rush but were unable to be
on campus that early.

decrease in freshmen enrollment at the university is connected
to the decline in the number of freshmen sorority
pledges. The university accepted 500 fewer freshmen this
year.

freshmen enrollment (in school)," Saunders said.
A rise in tuition costs also anectea rusn enrollment, according
to Saunders. She said financial reasons caused many
women to drop out of rush.
"Some girls couldn't afford it (pledging) this year because
of the unexpected increase in tuition," she said.
The number of sororities that made "quota" this year
declined also, Saunders said.
Only two of the nine sororities made quota, but three more
came close, she said.
Each year, a "quota" is set tojletermine the number of
girls each sorority can pieage. mat quota is aerivea Dy
dividing the number of women accepting invitations by the
number of sororities. Quota was 37 this year.
"QUOTA is to allow every girl a place (in a sorority),
Barclav said. "Our coal is to Dledee as manv girls who want
to pledge."
Initially, 370 women started rush this year. However, 224 or
61 percent pledged sororities. Last year, 64 percent of the
number of women rushing pledged.
Despite the enrollment decrease, Saunders said rush was
very successful this year.
we wani quaniy gins, not jusi a numuer. we want gins
who are responsible, will work hard, attend meetings, are
dedicated," she said.
"Everyone was pleased and excited with the pledges they
got," said Saunders. "Ninety-one percent of the girls who
pledged were matched to the sorority of their choice."
On the other hand, the Pan-Hellenic Council, which is
comprised of the four black sororities at USC, reported no
change in the number of girls rushing.

The number of women pledging black sororities at USC this
fall has not been compiled yet because rush is still underway.
"The number of girls participating in sorority rush has
been consistent in previous years," White said.
Unlike its white counterpart, the Pan-Hellenic Council does
not accept freshmen. You have to have a grade point ratio in
order to pledge," White said.
ouuic suiui Hies even require a certain numuer 01 nours
