Construction of a new air-conditioning and heating system
for the James F. Byrnes International Center has caused
(traffic problems for vehicles and pedestrians on Sumter,
Greene and College streets, but relief should come by the end
of this week, according to a university official.
Two phases of construction, one at Sumter and Greene
streets and another at Sumter and College streets, involve
the installation of underground chilled water and steam pipes
connecting Byrnes Center to the university's central power
system.
| According to Ed Shelley of the university's Project
* Development Maintenance Center, the cost to the univ -~ity
for both phases of construction will be about $550,000.

third power center, located on Whaley Street near Cliff
Apartments, will not be involved with the Droiect.
Shelley said the Byrnes Center project is necessary. "The
old system was worn out. It will be more efficient and
economical, energy-wise, to put the building on our central
system."
Construction on the new system was delayed until August,
when funding was approved by the State Budget and Control

Shelley expressed concern over the traffic problem caused
by the construction. "It is unfortunate that we couldn't have
gotten it done in the beginning of the summer when fewer
students were arou id."
Shelley said construction will be cleared for traffic by the
end of this week. The actual project may continue until
December.
