Senate Finance Committee chairman i
Mike Hardin resigned Sept. 17 during an !
allocations meeting closed to the public. <
]
He said his main reason for resigning was
a lack of time. "I wouldn't have the time to c
do the best job considering how much time ?
and effort the other members Dut in ? it I
wouldn't be just," he said.
Because the meeting was held to discuss >
allocation of student activity funds to 70 i
organizations, including the student media 1
department, committee members would not <
allow the Gamecock newspaper reporter to
attend. <

allowed to cover themeeting He said having {
a reporter there would give the Gamecock
an unfair advantage over other
organizations. He said the committee had i
derided in Mav not to allow the Cinmpmrb to I
cover the meetings. '
When told closing the meeting to the press
was a violation of the S.C. Freedom of In- *
formation Act, Gray said they had consulted '
legal counsel, and until they were told x
differently the press would not be allowed to
attend. <
Glory Gault, student government vice- '
president, said the committee wanted the
meeting closed because leaving it open
would put too much pressure on the com- 1
mittee. 1
Hardin said the meeting was closed >
because the Gamecock is considered an i
organization rather than the press when the <
committee is making allocation decisions. 1

:ar.
The largest allotment, over $7,000, was

HO,000 previously was allocated, but additional
money was requested to finance all
Homecoming events.
The committee also recommended funline
for several other organizations, but the
illocation budget is not final until approved
>y the Student Senate.
Gray said the USC Dance Company
-eceived a large sum because it had not
received any funding in previous years. It
,vas allocated $2,572 for a student
choreography production.
Other organizations that were tentatively
allocated money are the Clariosophic

Finance Committee administrative adviser
Mark Erickson explained the reasons

tvould be well into December before they
(Finance Committee) would be able to give
out the money or at least until November 4,"
he said.
