Von Henmon's is not southern rock, MOR, or beach music. It books regional bands to give Columbians exposure to new music. Located in Five Points between Yesterday's restaurant and the WinnDixie parking lot on Santee Avenue, Von Henmon's has been open for a year. It's desire to present local bands, inconsistent planning and a semi-cavernous appearance initially led to an image pruuieiu. feopie were not sure what Von Henmon s ; was: punk hangout, pool hall, gay spot or just a noisy bar. The recent addition of a manager with booking experience in Atlanta gives a new approach to combat this problem. Every Friday and Saturday night, and on some Monday and Thursday nights, live entertainment is booked. The bands are regional, usually from Atlanta, Athens, Charlotte, or Columbia. These groups are looking for a market in the south. Places like Von Henmon's fill this need. I caught Pylon's act Sept. 4 and came away impressed with the band and the audience. What an encouraging sight. It makes me look forward to the Method Actors, a two-man Athens band with European tours, an EP and a new album. They will be playing Sept. 17 and 18. While new music is the thing at Von Henmon's, any kind of group can book a party. The cost on Sundays \ and Saturday nights includes $50 rent, $40 per keg and $15 for a bartender. On weekdays there is no rent charge. \ Groups get special cups to avoid confusion when beer is served. And on Sundays the management will play any < music the party wants, including beach and disco. fAKE A ONI >s and Expedi jcreational trii id your minds ie'\\ send you stions in this id floor, Russe jffice or mail i your ideas m :olumbia.) if Best time u DAYT .Sumter) tie Beach) lorseback ride)...
