It happens so often you could almost write the script. Before
every game, every year, the two head coaches engage in a
"sweet-talk" duel, while each is inwardly hoping that his
team will dismantle the opposition. This week is no different.
Coach Jim Carlen says, "This is the best Mississippi team
we've faced since I've been here. They have exceptional
receivers, good running backs and a good defense. We're
gonna have our hands full? there's no doubt about it."
Go to the head of the class, Coach!

Carolina has another bowl team. When they lose good people,
they replace them with good people. Our position is that
we're gonna have to play hard and play well to win."
Nice job, Coach!
But the battle will be decided on the field this Saturday
when Steve Sloan brings his Ole Miss Rebels, 3-8 in 1980, to
town to tangle with Jim Carlen's Gamecocks, 8-4 last year.
Ole Miss is coming of a 19-18 opening win at Tulane, while
USC returns from a 23-6 win at Wake Forest.
Quarterback is a key position for both clubs. Most likely,
USC will alternate juniors Terry Bishop and Gordon
Beckham. Carlen praised both for their performances

not really much to choose between the two at this point."
JOHN FOURCADE, SEC offensive leader, is doubtful for
the Rebels He broke the rinff finffer on his riffht hand in
August, had the pins pulled out Sunday and four stitches put
in. He played some against Tulane and completed 9 of 15
passes for 69 yards. His shoulder was hit on a run and is now
giving him some trouble. Coach Sloan said Thursday
Fourcade "hasn t practiced all week" and will be looked to
as a "spot player" on Saturday.
Kelly Powell, a 6-1, 185 sophomore will start. Called "an
excellent passer" by Sloan, he threw for over 200 yards
against Tulane, including the winning TD to flanker Breck
Tyier. Tyier, a 6-3, is? senior, is tne Kebeis Dest receiver.
Gamecock tight end De Wayne Chi vers, who hurt his ankle
against Wake, is doubtful for Ole Miss.

offense was fine, but we hope to improve our defense. We

did well against Wake, but feels improvement can be made.
"We're a little thin at linebacker," he said. "Mike Durrah
played well Saturday, but he's young. J.D. Fuller is just
getting back in to it. Back deep, we've got Skipper, a junior:
Thomas, a sophomore; Bowen, a junior; and Perlotte, a
senior. We've got talent back there, but we will be tested by

SLOAN CHIMES in: "The South Carolina defense has cot
several great players and all the rest are good. They don't
give you much."
The match-ups are interesting. The USC defensive line
averages 241 pounds, while the Rebels' offensive line comes
in at 249. USC's offensive line scales 246, the Ole Miss
defensive front weighs in at 221. Sloan is trying to raise Ole
Miss up the SEC ladder in his fourth year at the University,
Miss, campus.
This is the ninth meeting between the two schools. USC
leads the series 5-3-0. In 1978, the Gamecocks won 18-17 in the
final seconds in Columbia. In 1979, USC won 21-14 at home.
