Theft insurance for students is being
offered for the first time at USC and 60 other
universities across the nation by Parker &
Parker Consultants of St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Students Personal Effects Protection
Program may not be suitable for all
students, though, according to Dan Garber,
vice-president of underwriting at Liberty

"Students considering buying theft insurance
should take an inventory of their
possessions first. If your effects don't add up
to more than $800 you probably don't need
the insurance," Garber said.
"IN SOME cases students arp nrntrWoH
under their parents' insurance policies. This
should also be checked by students," he
said.
Wayne LaRoach, a spokesman for Parker
& Parker Consultants, said response from
USC students has been good. "Since school
started, we've received 200 applications

inventory of what was stolen, with the serial
number of each item written beside it. Hie
student then needs to notify the insurance
company and send in the inventory list
along with an official police report of the
robbery," he said.
From there on matters take care of
themselves, LaRoach said.
THE DEPRECIATION schedule for
stolen goods is normally used in theft
policies, he said. "For items such as stereos
we have a ten-year depreciation schedule."

depreciation in value for every year a
student owns an item.
According to Garber, 'he theft insurance
seems to be "a standa' J operating policy
similar to home owners theft insurance."
"Although the premiums are a little high,

have possessions totaling more than $800 to
$1,000, it may be a good investment to buy
the insurance," Garber said.
"Of course, one option students always
have is not to keep anything valuable in
their room," he said.

proposals were passed
by a unanimous vote.
Also discussed was
the problem of students
forging the names of
faculty members to get
into a closed section of a
class.
Another concern was
the problem of faculty
members facing
liability suits when an
accident occurs during
a school-related field
trip. Patterson assured
the senate the matter
would be "looked into."
