friends and family when they call or come
over. My parents don't mind me rooming
with anyone if we get along together. We
^never talk, and I don't feel comfortable
bringing guys to the room."
A white Maxcy resident said his black
roommate would not acknowledge him in
the room. "We're barely ever in the room at
the same time, and when we are, we both go
about our own business. I try not to disturb
him but living like this is very frustrating,"

Reita Lark and Barbara Rothman, South
Building residents, are starting their second
year as roommates. Kothman said, "wnen
two people who live together are of different
races, there will be obvious cultural differences,
but Reita and I were willing to

whites to room together. Rothman, a native
of Illinois, said she thought the reason
blacks and whites don't get along well at
USC "could be the way the people in the
South are brought up."
Lewis Jackson, a black freshman from
Massachusetts, said he did not think there
was an underlying prejudice at USC. "I
think that generally the people here and at
home are about the same. There are some
small differences but not in the way I am
treated."

the roommate's race, but she said this
usually is handled at room change time.
Reb Thomas, residence hall director of
Snowden, said he had not encountered
blacks and whites complaining about
rooming together.
"Nobodv has actually come ud to me and
said they wanted to move because their
roommate was of the opposite race, but
unless they don't follow the correct room
swap procedure I wouldn't hear about it,"
