"Black fraternities originated as the first black students came to USC as study groups. They eventually evolved into fraternities," he said. Bennett said black fraternities satisfy a need at USC. Many USC hall advisers say one of the first questions asked by returning students is the color of their new roommates. Michelle Burchette, first-year hall adviser' at Sims, said she was shocked when many of the girls on her floor questioned her about their roommates. "Having a black for a roommate doesn't bother me. As long as my roommate is friendly and we get along I don't care who they are." He said race is indicated on the application, but it is not used in assigning rooms because to do so would be illegal.
