A major problem between
whites and blacks at USC is
the failure of whites to understand
blacks' needs to
organize within themselves,
said James Bennett,
president of Afro.

"There is no provision to
separate the black fraternities
from the whites. It just
appears to be an element of
mutual exclusiveness," he

Shanley said he did not
know how the trend of a

system started but that the
trend will probably continue.

Many USC hall advisers say one of the
first questions asked by returning students
is the color of their new roommates.
Michelle Burchette, first-year hall adviser'
at Sims, said she was shocked when many of
the girls on her floor questioned her about
their roommates. Burchette said she told
the girls she didn't know their roommates
but that they would meet soon enough. "If
things didn't work out, they could swap

John Bender, a white sophomore who
lives in the Towers, said he was surprised to
discover he had a black roommate but that
so far no problems have arisen.

doesn't bother me. As long as my roommate
is friendly and we get along I don't care who
they are."

students room with a person of another
race.
Some students who room with someone of
