While names like George
Rogers, Zam Fredrick and
Willie Scott have dominated
Carolina's sports community
over the last few
years, only the women's
tennis program has
produced consistent national
rankings. Toiling in the
shadows of Heisman
Trophys. scoring championships
and the college
world series, the Lady
Gamecocks have turned in
national rankings of 8th, 7th,
and 12th, respectively, since
1979. Keeping that string
alive without last season's
top two seeds is the task that
lies ahead for coach Jeff
Kefalos.
"As far as finishing in the
top ten goes... I just don't
know," says Kefalos. "We
nave so many people mai it s
hard to tell. I wouldn't call it
a rebuilding year, but right
now it's just a big question
mark."
Kefalos refused to
speculate on a lineup for the
Lady Gamecocks when they
open the fall season late this
month, but two returnees
likely to be in the top six are
Ellen Oxrieder and Carol
nenz. uxrieaer, a junior,
played No. 3 last year while
Renz, a senior , held down
the No. 5 spot. Other
returnees include
sophomores Johnna Chafin

that the returnees could be
hard pressed for playing

newcomers.
"We have so many new

not been decided yet, but the

Since the junior varsity
Gamecock football team
does not play a game until
Sept. 28, the coaching staff
has been busily preparing
the varsity squad for its
opening games. JV Coach
Bob Roe, however, is
already optimistic about the
prospect of another winning
season for the Biddies ? and
rightfully so.
"We've got a lot of good
young people in the fresh
man class," Roe said. The
JVs will be using freshman
quarterbacks Rich Ingold
and Bill Bradshaw, the latter
doubling as a back-up
kicker. Both players also
will be playing with the
varsity.
According to Roe, the

"They get actual game
experience offensively and
defensively because they
probably would not be
playing much varsity," Roe

"The people here are

They travel to Tennessee ^
