critic, I am obligated to
review the major new films
that reach theatres in the
Columbia area. But to focus

overlook the remarkable
cinematic opportunities on

of the movie facilities on and
near campus.
Many students don't
realize that USC is a near
paradise for watching films.
First of all, the University
Union's theatre at Russell

programs a variety of films
wide enough to satisfy the
most obscure tastes at extremely
reasonable prices.
You sav: "But some of those
films are so old." I say: "Go
see 'The General* or 'The
Maltese Falcon' or 'On the
Town' and tell me when
you've had a better time at
the movies." In truth, the
Russell House screens films
from every possible year
and genre.
Students are also fortunate
in that Columbia's only "art
cinema" club, the
Nickelodeon, is located a few
blocks up Main Street. A
non- profit theatre, the
Nickelodeon shows standard
classics and high quality
films that received short
runs in town ("Wise Blood,"
"Atlantic City"). But its

main attractions are recent,
highly acclaimed foreign
films (Bergman's "From
the Life of the Marionettes")
I ENCOURAGE vou to
consider the many foreign
films shown at Russell
House and the Nickelodeon.
Anyone who would dismiss a
movie simply because it is
from another country is
euner siupia or Daaiy
misguided. Subtitles won't
bite, and you might not get
another chance to see some
very moving French,
Italian, Japanese, German
and Spanish films because,
let's face it: they don't make
it to commercial theatres or
to the ABC Sunday Night
Movie.
Occasionally, special film
series appear on campus.
Last semester, the Institute
for Southern Studies sponsored
a series of films,
shown free of charge at
Gambrell Auditorium, in BWpn/?

eluding "Gone With the

Also, for students interested
in film art and
history, there are excellent
courses provided through
the English department. The
first, ENGL 565, is a basic
overview of world cinema's
major mstoncal
movements. The second, 566,
examines a particular genre
(science-fiction, documentary)
or filmmaker (Hitchcock,
Bergman).
Above, I described USC as
a "near paradise," the
reason beine that all the
facilities I listed show 16mm
prints of unpredictable
quality. The quality of the
projection also varies, but
has vastly improved since
last year, at Russell House
particularly. But these are
only small drawbacks at
most when vou consider the
abundance and variety of
movies practically in your
own back yard.
