Many campus organizations found out
Sept. 1 their number of block seats had been
reduced for the 1981 football season.
Student reaction to this was predictable :
everyone wanted to know why. The reason is
simple: too many tickets were in demand.
The number of tickets allotted to the Block
Seating Commission remained the same as
in the past two years ? 1,498. These tickets

campus that applies for block seatingat the
announced time. One representative from
each organization composes the Block
Seating Commission.
The commission met Aug. 31 and tallied
the memberships of their organizations.
After adding the memberships together,the
total was approximately 9,000. It was up to
the commission to divide those tickets
among the organizations in a fair manner.
The commission, headed by group leader
Kevin Hart, Moses Boyd and Robert
Moser, came up with a method of putting all
of the organizations on a scale according to
size and then distributing the tickets on a
percentage basis. This method, claims Kyle
Pruitt, chairman of the Senate Athletic
committee, enaoies tne smaller
organizations to compete on the same level
as the larger organizations.
Block seating is growing in popularity
each year. For licensed organizations it has
been in existence at USC for only 2 years.
The fraternities on campus, however, have
been receiving block seats for years. As in

the past, the Greeks received 1,838 seats per
game. The fraternities receive their tickets
separately from the Block Seating Commission.
Pruitt claims there are three alternative
solutions to the problem. First, if some
groups get frustrated with the present
system and drop out, their tickets will be

organizations.
A second alternative would be for the
Block Seating Commission to establish rules
limiting eligibility for block seating (now all
licensed organizations are elieihle)
The third solution would be to gain more
tickets. However, there are obstacles to this
measure. John Moore, vice president in
charge of athletics, USC President James B.
Holderman and ticket office officials would
all have to approve. Also, to increase the
number of tickets for block seating, the
amount of tickets for regular distribution
would have to be cut.
No organization was allotted more than 52
tickets, a dramatic decrease for those that
were allotted over 100 last year.
The Towers complex was allotted more
tickets, but the complex is composed of a
few organizations.
All organizations were told to turn in any
extra IDs they collected, and if there were
any exua ncKeus mey wouia oe equally
distributed. Some organizations did not fill
their allotted amount of block seats, and
therefore some organizations did receive a
few more tickets than they had anticipated.
