I Tiger. Clemson followers ?
who traditionally stayed in
town to enjoy the fair after
the game ? and police ad^
vised the USC students not to
parade the controversial
picture during the next
night's annual Elk's Parade;
the students, though, did
demonstrate the picture,
leading to near disaster.
Barton describes the event:
I "Following the parade, the
Clemson cadets were
dismissed near the Capital
building, which left them
only a short walk from the
^ Carolina campus. They
w quickly marched to the
Sumter Street entrance to
the campus, bayonets and
swords in readiness, while a
small band of Carolina
students crouched behind
hastily arranged defenses at
the wall. A few pistols, clubs
I and anything else that would
be usable in self defense,
were scattered through the
crowd." Christie Benet, a
Gamecock assistant coach,
^ acted as spokesman for the
^ greatly out-numbered
Carolina crowd and offered
to end the uproar by personally
boxing any two
Clemson cadets. School
Iomcials ana ponce soon
arrived, however, before
any physical confrontations
to end the riot. The incident
resulted in the suspension of
the Carolina-Clemson game
for six years.

a lone loss and for the first

I entered a season with optimism.

The year 1903 stood for 76
years as USC's most
productive football season,
and it nproved with time.
Tom Puce, Carolina's sports
information director,

that had masked a USC
victory for 69 years. Prior to
Price's discovery, the 1903
season was listed as having
nine games, seven of v/hich
Carolina won. A 29-0
Gamecock win over Guilford
was somehow omitted
through the years. The 1903
season ? which included
wins over Welsh Neck (89-0),
Tennessee, vjreorgia lecn,
Georgia, Davidson, Guilford
and two wins over the
Columbia YMCA ? lifted
enthusiasm to an all-time
high at Carolina. A
Gamecock editorial
following the season read:
"Carolina is now recognized
as a star of first magnitude
in the athletic firmament of
the South " Williams left his
coaching post at USC in 1903,
however, and soon fell out of
Gamecock fans' favors, for
six years later he turned
"traitor" as Clemson's
coach and beat Carolina two
of the next three games.
Carolina marched on to
post winning seasons in the
next two seasons, recording
5-2-1 and 4-2-1 records,
respectively.
Football, however, was in
general not enjoying so
much success. The deaths of
several players had
destroyed the developing
sport's national popularity
? there were 18 footballrelated
deaths in 1905 around
the country. Bills to abolish
the sport were abundant in

Unlike shoes, you can't buy new feet when they wear out.
That's why NIKE makes shoes for individuals. Shoes for the
road, the trails and models for both. For feet that are flat or arched,
rigid or flexible. Whether you chum out 125 miles a week or run
a good ten. AtKKfF*
So come tie one on. And avoid a run-in ,
with your feet.
