Pickpockets
The letter USC sent this summer to continuing students and
incoming freshmen casually announced a 1981-82 tuition
increase and reassured parents that USC's "high quality of
education" will not be affected.
The letter reflects all of the grace and style of a pickpocket
who gets caught with one hand in someone's trousers while
patting the person's back with the other. However, students
and parents, weary of USC's tuition increases (tuition has
risen 77 percent in the past 5 years), should not be concerned
with the administration's burnt! intz attemDts at finesse.
Concerned customers should worry about feeble efforts by
USC and the state legislature to locate new pockets.
It has been suggested before that an increase in the state
sales tax could provide relief for USC's burgeoning tuition
problems. Raising the sales tax from four to five percent
would generate the money needed to stabilize tuition rates.
But this solution appeals only to a few state officials ? the
most vocal being Sen. Rembert C. Dennis.
If USC's administration, faculty, students and alumni lent
support to a proposed sales tax increase, the idea could
evolve into a sensible solution to a serious problem. If USC
won't support this idea or find another means of compensating
for reduced appropriations besides emptying
students' pockets, potential students will go elsewhere for
that "high quality" education.
The increase ? $50 more for in-state students and $100
more for out-of-state students ? comes as another blow to
students who were relying on federal grants that no longer
exist. Reagan's cutbacks will prevent many fine minds from
developing their full potentials.
The USC administration bared its insensitivity by relying
