He also was instrumental in procuring astronauts John W.
Young and Robert L. Crippen of the space shuttle Columbia
to speak at May graduation ceremonies this year.
Holderman has succeeded in unifying and streamlining the,
USC campus network by bringing all nine branch campuses
into the budget process and by standardizing university
services.
According to Holderman, OSU wants the "visibility",
Carolina has had, and when the Buckeyes talk about "waking
the sleeping giant," they are hoping for a president who "will
take some real strides to project Ohio State to a more visible
arena than it nas oeen."
OSU trustees also considered Holderman on the basis of
what an Ohio newspaper called "political know-how," citing
his victory last March in a battle with the South Carolina
Commission on Higher Education. The commission claimed
USC's General Studies programs duplicate programs offered
by state technical schools and, therefore, should be
eliminated. USC won in its appeal to legislative committees
to keep the programs.
Holderman said OSU officials were impressed with.
Carolina's growth and that they "surprised" him with,
statistics showing an increase in research dollars.

before I came here, there were $14 million in research grants
from the federal government, and in the four years since I've
been here, there's been $70 million in research grants ?
there's been a $56 million increase," Holderman said.
H
Carolina's continued growth was one of several factors in 1,
Holderman's decision to take his name out of consideration ^
at OSU. He has plans for the University of South Carolina. W
Besides shooting for a multimillion dollar goal in a future
fund drive, Holderman wants to add to USC!s international
acclaim ? and not just with the "gloss and glamour of
visiting dignitaries." He also wants to beef up what he calls
the "substance" of the international program.
Faculty salaries at Carolina should be at a "hard and fast
level ? where they're competitive with^he top 100 institutions
in the nation," he said. \*
"I have no modest ambitions for this institution,"
Holderman said. V j
Although he received advice from local and national levels
and from his family, the decision to stay at Carolina was his i
alone, Holderman said.
