Kappa Alpha Psi, a black
fraternity, was given
university housing Wed.,
July 15, a first for black
Greek organizations on the
USC campus.
The fraternity won a
lottery entered by five Greek
organizations for a twostory,
three-bedroom house
at 1007 Henderson St. that
was recently vacated by

Associate Dean of Student
Affairs Mark Shanley said
the sorority moved out of the
house because of rent and
utility bill problems, and
"they couldn't get the
minimum number of
members."
WHEN THE sorority left,
Student Affairs invited the 20
chartered groups without on
campus housing and
meeting space to apply for _
the house, Shanley said. "We f
decided that a lottery was I
the fairest way to decide."
Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha
Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma
and Delta Upsilon fraternities
and Zeta Tau Alpha
sorority, applied for the
space.

The house will cost Kappa
Alpha Psi $225 per month
plus utilities, according to
Shanley.
Before moving in, they will
have to sign a lease,
renovate and provide furnishing.
Shanley said six
members can actually live in .

"We're still in the process
of deciding who will live
there," said fraternity
member Marx Davis "It's
not in bad shape ; it needs to
be painted and needs a few
minor repairs."
DAVIS SAID each
memoer wno gets to live in
the house will probably pay
$400 per semester. The
money will be used to cover
rent and utilities and for an
emergency fund in case
problems arise, he added.
Davis thinks that since his
fraternity is the first black
one to have an on-campus
house, it will come under
close scrutiny by university
officials. "I guess you call it
walking a tightrope," he
said.
Shanley said Kappa Alpha
Fsi could begin renovations
and moving August 1.

have been trying for years to
obtain on-campus housing.
An earlier attempt was
killed two years ago when a
proposal to create additional
Greek housing in the area of
Greene, Henderson and
College streets was turned
down by the City of
Columbia.
THE COLUMBIA Zoning
Board of Adjustments
rejected a move by USC in
June 1979 to make Greek
space available in that area
by refusing to rezone it.
The decision was influenced
by considerable
oppostion from area
residents and faculty
members with offices there
who didn't want fraternities
and sororities living next
door.
